Anxiety disorders are a cluster of mental disorders characterized by significant and uncontrollable feelings of anxiety and fear such that a person's social, occupational, and personal function are significantly impaired. Anxiety also refers to anticipation of a future concern and is more associated with muscle tension and avoidance behaviour. It can be a normal reaction to stress. For example, you might feel anxious when faced with a difficult problem at work, before taking a test, or before making an important decision. According to the World Health Organisation, 3.6 percent — or about 264 million individuals worldwide — have an anxiety disorder. Additionally, 4.6 percent of females and 2.6 percent of males globally are affected by anxiety.
Types of Anxiety disorders
- Agoraphobia,
- Panic disorder,
- Selective mutism,
- Separation anxiety disorder,
- Social phobia, etc
Causes of anxiety
Anxiety can be caused by;
- Genetic factors: where part, or all of the risk, is passed down from one's parents like depression or bipolar
- Environmental factors: like current life situation and
- Psychological factors: Past or childhood experiences,
Most times anxiety can be triggered in people with certain personality types because they are more prone to anxiety disorders than others are.
Symptoms
From personal experience I've had difficulty sleeping, getting up from bed and even being scared to speak up most times. I try to avoid situations that trigger or worsen the situation even though my school work and personal relationships have been affected, lol though Anxiety disorders could be noticed
- feeling restless, nervous or tense,
- Having a sense of impending danger or panic
- Increased heart rate (heart palpitations)
- Breathing rapidly (hyperventilation)
- Sweating
- Trembling
- Feeling weak or tired
- Having trouble concentrating
- Having trouble sleeping
- Having difficulty controlling worry
- Having the urge to avoid things that trigger anxiety
- Overwhelming panic
How to manage/cope with Anxiety
- Visit a psychologist or a therapist
- Get regular exercise.
- avoid caffeine, smoking, and alcohol, as they may make anxiety worse.
- Take deep breaths
- Accept that you cannot control everything.
- Talk to someone
- Get enough sleep
